Final Week of Construction

This is the final week of major construction. After this week, the contractor will begin to repair punch list items which will impact the public for short intervals during the day.

The contractor will install new asphalt pavement on the south side of 70th South from Executive Drive to 1985 West on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

During these operations, driveways adjacent to the work will not be accessible for a few hours. Residents should plan to avoid the street and using the affected driveways during this time. The contractor can help you get in or out in case of an emergency.

Thank you for your patience!

PROJECT OVERVIEW
7000 South Redwood Road to 1985 West

Work began in 2016 to replace water, sewer, and storm drain utilities and also replace the roadway surface on 7000 South from the Jordan River to 3200 West. This project is the largest both in terms of miles of infrastructure and also project costs.  This project replaced some of the oldest pipes in the city.  These utilities have reached the end of their life expectancy and it is safer to replace them rather than to wait for them to break and cause an accident or an unsafe sewer backup.

The good news is that it is almost finished! The final section from Redwood Road to 1985 West is scheduled to begin construction this spring and is scheduled for completion summer 2018. (Some punch list items from 1985 West to 3100 West will also take place and take about a month to complete.  More Information)

The project includes:

  • New 24-inch sewer lines

  • New sewer connections

  • New culinary water services

  • Improved storm drain facilities

  • New roadway surface

During this project, 7000 South will be restricted to one lane in each direction and left turns will not be allowed at Redwood Road.

When construction takes place at the intersection of Redwood and 7000 South, no left turns will be allowed so that the left turn lanes can be used as thru travel lanes. Three lanes in the peak direction and two lanes in the non-peak direction will be open during the day. The contractor will work at night between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Road construction is never convenient, and we ask for your continued patience so we can get the work done in a safe and timely manner. As will all construction, schedules are subject to change due to weather and equipment.

Project Update - June 21

June 21

East of Redwood Road

The contractor has completed the sewer, water, and stormwater work east of Redwood Road.  The contractor has begun the process of restoring the roadway to its original condition. This includes the construction of concrete panels. When the work is complete, the concrete will still need to cure and gain strength for 7 to 10 days before traffic can drive on it and the construction will be done east of Redwood Road!

Redwood Road Construction

The contractor has two more panels to replace in Redwood Road before work is complete.  As the end of work approaches, motorist should see the contractor begin to re-stripe Redwood and re-install the median. The contractor plans to remove all traffic barricades and open all lanes in Redwood Road by the end of June.

Redwood Village Water Shutdown

The final planned water shutdown for the Redwood Village Shopping Center is scheduled to take place Monday, June 25th. Impacted businesses will be notified 72 hours in advance. This shutdown is necessary to replace the old water service. We apologize for the inconvenience.

West of Redwood Road

Mainline sewer, water, and storm drain work is complete west of Redwood. Service connections to homes and businesses must still be completed on the south side of the road. This work will likely take about another month and will not be complete prior to the Fourth of July holiday.

Parade activities will close 7000 South between Redwood and 2200 West from 7 a.m.-noon on July 4th. Message boards will go up with closure details. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. and marches north up Redwood Road from City Hall and turns west on 7000 South to 2200 West.

Project Update - June 6

Redwood Road Intersection

This week crews are working to complete all the concrete on the north side of 70th South through the Redwood Road intersection. To keep five lanes open at all times on Redwood Road, this work has to be done in sections. The contractor has completed 2 of the 5 sections required to restore Redwood Road. Next week the contractor expects to switch traffic to the newly completed concrete road on the north side of 70th South.

While concrete lasts longer, it is more difficult to construct. You may see workers waiting for the next load of concrete to be delivered and you might also see what looks like finished roadway and wonder why you can't drive on it. It is because it is still curing. It typically takes 5-10 days to cure before it is strong enough for vehicles to drive on it.

Possible Road Closures

As crews install storm drains in the intersections of 1905 West, 1985 West, Camelot Drive and Executive Drive, there will not be enough room for vehicles to enter and exit these locations. The contractor will notify residents by reader boards posted on 70th South. The contractor is working night and day to finish the mainline storm drain.

Project Update - May 24

Redwood Road Intersection

Crews are grading the road and placing concrete east and west of Redwood Road. Once the concrete is cured (which takes about 7 days to reach the design strength needed to support vehicles), traffic will be switched to the north side of 70th South so that work on the south side of the road can be completed.

Waterline Shutdowns Scheduled Next Week

Redwood Village Shopping Center – Water will be shut off Monday, May 28th,  from 9 p.m. to Tuesday, May 29th, to 9 a.m. so the contractor can construct a waterline loop over the new storm drain line. Impacted businesses will receive a shutdown notice prior to the work.

Executive Drive – Water will be shut off Tuesday, May 29th, from 9 p.m. to Wednesday, May 30th, to 9 a.m. so the contractor can construct a waterline loop over the new storm drain line. Impacted homes will receive a shutdown notice prior to the work.

Memorial Day Weekend Schedule

No construction work will be taking place over the Memorial Day weekend. Work will resume Monday evening. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!

Project Update - May 17

East of Redwood Road

Good news! Crews are getting ready to begin grading the road in preparation for installing concrete east of Redwood Road. UDOT is requiring concrete in this intersection because it lasts about 2 1/2 times longer than asphalt.

Project Update - May 14

Waterline Break Impacting Executive Drive, Redwood Village Shopping Center and 7-Eleven

Crews are working to restore water service to Executive Drive, Redwood Village Shopping Center, and the 7-Eleven on the northwest corner of Redwood Road and 70th South. An unexpected waterline break occurred about 1 a.m. Monday morning at the intersection of Redwood and 70th South. Crews are working to fix the break and also turn on the water as soon as possible. The contractor hopes to complete both the emergency repairs and the planned waterline tie-in work at the same time rather than shutting the water off again tonight.

Project Update - May 10

Sewer Connections at 1905 West and 1985 West Intersections

Starting Monday, May 14th, Knife River will begin installing a sewer connection at 1905 West and 70th South. The work is expected to last two days. Knife River is requesting that residents who live on 1905 West use 1985 West for access to their homes during this time.

Following the lateral connection at 1905 West, Knife River will install a connection at 1985 West on approximately Wednesday, May 16th, and Thursday, May 17th. Those who live on 1985 West should use 1905 West to access their homes. Please note: Weather impacts are expected throughout the weekend and could alter the schedule.

Water Shutdown May 14th for Executive Drive and Redwood Village Shopping Center

Water service will be shut off Monday, May 14th from 9 pm through Tuesday, May 15th until approximately 7 am so crews can tie in the Executive Drive water line into the 12-inch water line in 70th South. All those whose water will be shut off will receive a door hanger notifying them of the work. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that those who are affected plan accordingly. The work will take place at night to minimize the impact.

Progress Across Redwood Road Intersection

Work in the Redwood Road intersection began Wednesday, April 18th. Work is scheduled for completion by July. The contractor has completed the mainline sewer across Redwood Road. This is the first crossing and crews will be back to install water lines and also storm drain through this intersection.

No left turns will be allowed from Redwood Road to 7000 South or from 7000 South to Redwood Road. Much of the work in the intersection will take place at night between the hours of 8:30 p.m.-5:30 a.m. Lane shifts will continue as crews install water, sewer and storm drain lines so please pay attention to the message boards.

Work Continues West of Redwood Road

Crews are on schedule to complete the installation of the 30-inch sewer line west of Redwood Road this weekend. When the work is complete, the sewer pump (pictured above) will be removed. The contractor plans on spending at least another week connecting the neighborhood sewer lines into the new 30-inch sewer mainline. When the sewer connections are complete, the contractor will begin installing 60-inch storm drain lines just west of Redwood Road.

Project Update - May 2

Progress Across Redwood Road Intersection

The contractor has installed the main sewer line across Redwood Road and also some water lines. The sewer lines for the businesses east of Redwood are complete. This week they will be installing storm drain lines and a 24-inch steel water line. The contractor has a permit from the Salt Lake County Health Department that allows them to work at night when they can close Redwood Road down to one lane in each direction. (During the day, they have to keep three lanes open in the peak travel direction and two lanes open in the non-peak direction.) Allowing the contractor to work at night helps get the work done faster. They are on schedule to complete the project by the end of June.

Water Shutdown May 7th for Executive Drive and Redwood Village Shopping Center

Water service will be shut off Monday, May 7th from 10 pm through Tuesday, May 8th at 7 am so crews can tie in a new water line west of Redwood Road. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that those impacted on Executive Drive, the four homes on the south side of 70th South between Executive and Camelot, and businesses in the Redwood Village Shopping Center plan accordingly. The work will take place at night to minimize the impact. (All those whose water will be shut off will receive a door hanger notifying them of the work.)

Work Continues West of Redwood Road

Crews continue to install 30-inch sewer lines west of Redwood Road. The sewer main line is being installed in the middle of 70th South, which is restricting left turns for many of the side streets. Please turn right in and out of the side streets and don't try to turn left across the work zone. We recognize it is a big inconvenience, but unfortunately, the pipes are located in the center of the road.

Project Update - April 26

Intersection of 1905 West and 7000 South

Starting Friday, April 27th, the intersection of 1905 West and 7000 South will be impacted by construction work.  For safety reasons, traffic will only be able to turn right onto 1905 West and turn right coming out of 1905 West onto 7000 South.  Eastbound traffic on 7000 South will not be able to turn left, and traffic turning onto 7000 South will not be allowed to turn left.  Residents are encouraged to use 1985 West as access in and out of the residential area.

Sewer line replacement is approaching the intersection, and a manhole will be set in the intersection next week.  Construction impacts to the intersection are expected to last through next week. After crews work past 1905 West, they will set a sewer manhole in the intersection of 1985 West. At that time, residents are encouraged to use 1905 West for access.  Future storm drain and grading/paving activities will impact both the intersections of 1905 West and 1985 West through the next couple months.

Road construction is never convenient, and we ask for your continued patience so we can get the work done in a safe and timely manner. As with all construction, schedules are subject to change due to weather, equipment and unforeseen utility complications.

Project Update - April 17

Work Begins in the Redwood Road Intersection

Work in the Redwood Road intersection has begun and will continue for about the next

2 ½ months. Medians have been removed so there are more available travel lanes while the road is under construction. Three lanes in the peak direction and two lanes in the non-peak direction will be open during the day. Temporary signals will be installed.

Executive Drive

Crews will be installing a sewer manhole near the entrance to Executive Drive starting Wednesday through Saturday. The work in this area will make it tight for traffic to get in and out of Executive Drive. In order to make it safe and keep traffic flowing, residents are encouraged to enter Executive Drive heading eastbound on 7000 South and make a right turn into Executive Drive. When exiting Executive Drive, please turn right and head eastbound on 7000 South. The safest option is no left-hand turns in or out of Executive Drive. The contractor will have a flagger at the access point to help traffic in and out of Executive Drive.

Water Line Break

Monday, April 16, crews were installing a sewer line that runs under an old water line. The water pipe unexpectedly burst, which caused a water shutoff for about an hour while crews worked to fix it. It’s not uncommon for old pipes to break when the dirt around them is disturbed. When a water shutoff is planned, advance notification will take place, but sometimes a waterline break happens unexpectedly and advance notice isn’t possible. As these old pipes are replaced, breaks will be less likely to occur.

Project Update - April 16

Water Line Break

We apologize for any inconvenience but during the course of work, the contractor has caused a water outage that will affect the following areas:

  • Executive Drive

  • Harbor Freight and surrounding stores

  • 7-Eleven

City crews have mobilized to assist the contractor and fix the problem. We expect the water service to be restored within the next two hours.

Project Update - April 10

Sewer Work Continues

Sewer work continues on both sides of the 7000 South and Redwood Road intersection this week.  Pictured above: Workers install an 84-inch diameter sewer manhole.

70th South Lane Restrictions

  • Drivers on 7000 South should expect lane shifts from the Smiths entrance to 1985 West.

  • No left turns will be allowed at 7000 South and Redwood Road. As construction passes each drive entrance, driveway access to 7000 South will be temporarily closed as the sewer trench passes.

  • Access to Executive Drive will be restricted to one lane with a flagger present as the work zone nears this intersection.

Redwood Road Lane Restrictions

  • Drivers on Redwood could begin to see lane restrictions next week.

  • Center medians will be removed and traffic will be shifted to the west as the contractor prepares to work in the intersection.

  • Left turns will not be allowed.

  • Three lanes in the peak direction and two lanes in the non-peak direction will be open during the day.

  • Look for message boards to provide more information.

Project Update – April 7

Redwood Road to 1985 West

Construction on the 70th South Utility project started this past week. Knife River Construction is back to finish installing water, sewer and storm drain utilities on 7000 South from just east of Redwood Road to 1985 West. They will be working on both sides of Redwood Road simultaneously and then proceed into the intersection of Redwood Road. As with all construction, schedules are subject to change due to weather and equipment.

Work Accomplished

They have been installing the new sewer line on the east side of Redwood Road. Next they will install the new storm drain system.

On the west side of Redwood Road, crews are removing concrete to access the sewer mainline and begin replacing the sewer line.

Next Week’s Operations

Traffic will be switched to the south edge of the Redwood Road intersection Monday morning.

Left turns at 7000 South and Redwood will not be allowed for the duration of the project.

$2,500 Reward

Unfortunately, within days after moving the big excavator on site, the battery and computer system were ripped out, which has left it inoperable. The contractor is offering a $2,500 reward to anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandals targeting the project equipment.

Project Update - April 3

Redwood Road to 1985 West

Today Knife River Construction placed traffic control devices (barrels, cones, arrow boards, warning signs, etc.) in the roadway at 7000 South to the east of Redwood Road and to the west of Redwood Road to begin replacing the sewer line. They also restricted left turns at Redwood Road and reduced 7000 South to one lane in some areas. The contractor is working to cut and remove concrete, which is expected to take a few days.  When the concrete has been removed, the contractor will begin to install new sewer line.

2700 West to 3100 West
The contractor is also working between 3100 West and 2700 West where they are raising manholes, fixing sprinkler systems and installing landscaping. During this time, some lane and shoulder closures will occur.

Mar 26, 2018

Project Update – March 26

Knife River Contractors spent much of last year working to replace water, sewer, and storm drain utilities from 1985 West to just west of the Utah and Salt Lake Canal near 3100 West.  This work was not complete until December and the corresponding dip in temperatures did not allow them to finish punch list items such as raising manhole lids and water valves, milling the roadway surface to improve the ride quality, repairing broken concrete, and finishing landscaping repairs in the front yards of residents.

The Contractor returned the week of March 26th to complete these repairs.  Once the repairs are complete, homeowners can expect a visit from the Contractor asking them to sign a form acknowledging that the repairs have been completed and that the yard looks as good as it did before construction. It will likely take up to a month to complete the punch list items.  During this time, some lane and shoulder closures will occur.  Questions? Please call 801-569-5101.

Mar 16, 2018

12:00 PM

Project Update – March 16

The contractor has placed construction barricades and variable message boards on 7000 South between 1300 West and Redwood Road.  This signals that construction is about to begin again on the 7000 South construction project.  Kilgore Contractors will be on site Friday (03/16) and Saturday (03/17) to grind the uneven spots on the roadway surface.  If the weather does not cooperate or takes longer than expected this work could impact the public on Monday (3/19) and Tuesday (3/20) as well.

The Utah Department of Transportation is expected to approve a permit to allow the sewer, water, and storm drain work to begin Monday, March 26.  When that permission has been granted, expect to see the Contractor bring back the large excavators, trucks and compaction equipment that they used last fall.  The City will share a proposed construction schedule for the project once work begins.

Thank you for your patience.
