In my role representing the city at the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, I get updates every month regarding the region’s water outlook. The fact is we’re coming off a winter with record low snowpack. And while the recent rains have been welcome, they’re not quite a drop in the bucket when it comes to the bigger picture. We’re still in a severe long-term drought, and that’s going to require some discipline on our part.

A simple place to start is delaying outdoor watering. We’re asking residents to wait to turn on your sprinklers until May 15. Early watering doesn’t do much for your lawn, but it does use water we can’t afford to waste right now. It’s true that you may see some city irrigation running before then. That’s typically for system checks, repairs, or establishing newly planted areas that need water to survive. It’s limited and intentional, not full seasonal watering.

We can manage through this, but only if we’re intentional about it.

We’re all being asked to do our part. See how West Jordan’s new conservation lead is making it easier to conserve at home.
