Vibrant Mountain Mural Brings New Life to West Jordan Water Tank

A colorful mural of stylized mountains with vibrant blue, red, and orange hues decorates a curved wall under a clear blue sky, with gravel in the foreground.

We have a new view on 4000 West and 7800 South. West Jordan resident and artist Elizabeth Walsh transformed the bland concrete water tank into a shining vista, 12 feet tall and 100 feet long, as beautiful and imposing as the same Wasatch Front mountains that surround us.

During the 2020 pandemic shutdown, Walsh threw herself into painting, like many people who discovered new hobbies during that time. “I was working for the University of Utah and was sent home,” she said. “I was always here and I had so much time on my hands during the evenings and weekends. I started painting.”

Since then, she has created hundreds of mountain and nature representations in her own distinctive style; bold lines and bright colors.

Walsh “doesn’t see art in a pretentious way.” She paints to clear her head, and “it’s just generally very happy.”

Her art usually features mountains or elements of nature and is “a reflection or celebration of the environment and natural landscapes that we should protect more than we do.”

West Jordan City is proud to support local artists and promote the beautification and creative expression throughout the community.

Every year, the City Council sets aside money from the General Fund for public art. Artists are chosen through a formal request and the Public Art Committee reviews and approves projects.

“Public art…reflects and reveals our society, adds meaning to our cities and uniqueness to our communities. Public art humanizes the built environment and invigorates public spaces.”
