Safe and Clean Water

The City of West Jordan is dedicated to providing safe and dependable water to its residents. The city is pleased to present its 2026 Water Quality Report, which contains important information about the quality of your drinking water.

Our Water Sources

The City of West Jordan’s water supply comes from two sources.

93% from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District treated water sources, including mountain reservoirs, springs, and wells.

7% from city-owned groundwater wells.

Are There Contaminants in My Drinking Water?

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily mean that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants can and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline: 800-426-4791

Arsenic

While your drinking water meets EPA standards for arsenic, it still can contain low levels of arsenic. The EPA’s standard balances the current understanding of arsenic’s possible health effects against the costs of removing arsenic from drinking water. The EPA continues to research the health effects of low levels of arsenic, which is a mineral known to cause cancer in humans at high concentrations and is linked to other health effects such as skin damage and circulatory problems.

Lead

If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The City of West Jordan is responsible for providing high-quality drinking water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize your potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. Water Testing

The Water Division takes more than 100 routine water samples each month from wells, storage reservoirs, and transmission/distribution lines to monitor water quality and protect public safety.

Drinking Water Source Protection

Pollution prevention is the most effective groundwater protection measure. Underground aquifers are often threatened by contamination from paint, used motor oil, gasoline, or lawn and garden chemicals that are not disposed of properly.

Potential Contaminants

Water quality can be affected by natural elements and chemical elements introduced by humans. Over-applying fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides can introduce contaminants into the water source, including dirt, leaves, and grass clippings.

Avoiding Water Contamination

Never use the gutter or storm drain system for disposal of household hazardous waste. If you would not drink it, do not dump it.

  • Clean spills with kitty litter or another absorbent material and let it dry.
  • Properly dispose of unused cleaners, herbicides, pesticides, and other household chemicals.
  • Take unwanted hazardous materials to the Trans-Jordan Landfill.
  • Recycle used oil and do not mix other materials with oil.

Stormwater Pollution

Stormwater is not treated and can affect overall water quality. It flows through storm drains to local creeks, canals, and rivers, which can then move to groundwater.

We all live downstream. Avoid placing waste products or chemicals near or in storm drains.

What You Can Do to Protect Our Water Supply

Look through your home, garage, or shed for leftover cleaners, oil-based paints, stain removal products, and automotive fluids. If used in ways other than intended, these products can harm stormwater and the water supply.

The Trans-Jordan Landfill accepts residential household hazardous waste at no charge Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 10873 S. Bacchus Hwy., South Jordan.

Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention

A cross connection is a physical connection to the water system through piping that could allow pollutants or contaminants to backflow into the public drinking water system.

Install a hose bib vacuum breaker on each threaded hose bib around your home. Landscape sprinkling systems connected to the public drinking water system must have an approved backflow prevention assembly and be tested annually.

Indoor and Outdoor Water Use

About 66% of West Jordan residents’ culinary water is used for landscape irrigation. Water deeply but as infrequently as possible. Try applying one-half inch of water at a time: once a week in spring, gradually increasing to once every three days in summer, then gradually returning to once a week in fall.

Utah is a desert state, and water conservation is critical because of population growth. Visit ConserveWater.utah.gov for real-time watering recommendations.
