While snow can become dangerous if temperatures go up too quickly, experts do not anticipate West Jordan will see extreme flooding this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive snowpack built up against a foundation, coupled with rain, could cause nuisance flooding in basements and yards. Residents are encouraged to check their foundation is free from several feet snow and ensure that downspouts are working properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How the City is Preparing for Potential Flooding:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City continues to plan for heavy springtime runoff. Crews have cleared hundreds of storm drains and inspected thousands of miles of pipe to ensure they are free from debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Checking Creek Corridors: Creek corridors can act as natural sponges, absorbing large amounts of water and releasing it slowly over time and any debris may cause backup and flooding in creeks. Please do not dump anything in to creeks and don&#8217;t remove vegetation from the creek area.<\/li><li>Monitoring Detention and Retention Ponds: Detention ponds are designed to temporarily store excess stormwater runoff during heavy rain events. Retention ponds, on the other hand, are designed to permanently hold water and promote infiltration into the ground. Both need to be clear of debris. If you notice any issues that may need attention, contact our Public Works Department: 801-569-5700.<\/li><li>Sweeping Gutters: Street sweepers have begun clearing gutters of leaves and debris. Blocked stormwater drains can be a source for flooding.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How You Can Help:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve had flooding on your property before, you might have problems again. Consider creating a buffer around your home. Consider investing in sandbags or similar items from a local home improvements store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you experience flooding at your home, due to rain and runoff, and the situation is an emergency, please call 911.
