November 2021

Did you know West Jordan is home to more than 3,200 businesses? The companies in our city provide residents with goods and services, as well as more than 40,000 jobs. Knowing that these organizations contribute to our community encourages me to seek out opportunities to support them.

Why Shopping Local Matters:

When my wife Janet and I want to grab a bite to eat, we head to a restaurant in town. Choosing to spend money in our city ensures it will be cycled back into our economy. Who would have thunk buying a sandwich and shake would benefit public safety and infrastructure?

When you buy from a West Jordan business, you help them with the opportunity to give back to our community. Take High Point Coffee, for example. Every year the owner holds a holiday fund raiser, gifting presents to children in West Jordan. Investing in local businesses helps pay it forward to people in our community.

Did you know West Jordan is home to manufacturing companies that produce goods sold all over the world? You can seek out local products in national chains. Papa Pita’s flat bread and Great Grains bread loaves are baked here and sold in Walmart and Costco stores across the Country. Another local bakery, Dunford Bakery, provides donuts and bread all over the Intermountain West and as far away as Fairbanks, Alaska. Looking for a product sold all over the world? Don’t miss Dannon’s Oikos Greek Yogurt and Taffy Town’s unique candies.

When to Shop Local:

Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It’s a day that promotes shoppers to consider buying local after a few days of getting deals at big-box stores. This year I’m asking that you extend Small Business Saturday to other days of the week, year-round.

Is buying online shopping local?

While having something shipped online to a West Jordan address generates sales tax provided to our community, buying from local business owners we know, and trust can do even more. It elevates us all as we work together making West Jordan a fantastic place to live AND work!

Sincerely,

Mayor Dirk Burton
