Project Overview:
This project will greatly enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety, allowing them to cross 7000 South above traffic, eliminating conflict points with motor vehicles. The project also includes the construction of three retention basins, removal of the existing crosswalk and accompanying warning signal, and updated landscaping. During the school year, we will maintain uninterrupted access to Heartland Elementary School.
Project Updates:
June 2025:
The week of June 18th, crews will begin digging footings for the bridge on the north side of 7000 South. Footings are shallow foundations, which serve to evenly distribute weight over a large area, to help prevent soil settlement and ensure the bridge’s stability. This will take a few weeks to complete, including prepping for, and pouring, concrete for the vertical bridge columns.
Work hours will typically be Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Nearby residents and businesses can expect increased noise, dust, and vibration during work hours.
*Schedule subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Traffic Alerts
- Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times.
- Lanes may be shifted to utilize the center turn lane as a travel lane, to provide the contractor with additional space to work in the shoulders.
- Bicycle and pedestrian routes through the corridor will be maintained at all times.
Safety
- The work area in the Heartland Elementary School field has been fenced off for the children’s safety. Please encourage your children to avoid the construction area, both during and outside of work hours.
For the safety of our crews, please take extra caution when driving through the work zone and pay attention to any traffic control devices on the road.
Construction on the new 7000 South & 1500 West Pedestrian Bridge is officially underway! Until school is out for the summer (June 6), all work activities will take place on the north side of 7000 South, across from Heartland Elementary.
Upcoming Work Activities
- Over the next two weeks, third party utility companies will be on site to underground the power and communication lines on the north side of 7000 South, to accommodate the new bridge.
- Starting this week, crews will begin piledriving activities to install “piles”, or vertical supports, for the new bridge. This will take approximately one week on each side of 7000 South.
- Nearby residents should expect increased noise and vibrations during this time.
- As early as June 9, CenturyLink will be on site to relocate conduit on the south side of 7000 South, which is currently conflicting with the planned bridge footings.
Work hours will typically be Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

- Once school is out for the summer, lanes may be shifted to utilize the center turn lane as a travel lane, to provide the contractor with additional space to work in the shoulders.

May 2025:
As early as Monday, May 19, 2025, West Jordan City will begin a project to build a new pedestrian bridge over 7000 South (SR-48) at approximately 1500 West, next to Heartland Elementary School.
Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times, with the exception of up to six nights where the road will be fully closed, and traffic will be detoured. Bicycle and pedestrian routes through the corridor will be maintained at all times. The project is planned to be complete by the end of May 2026.
Nearby residents can expect increased dust, noise, and vibration associated with construction activities.
