As I was knocking doors and visiting with residents one question, I received several times was “What does the city council do?”. Here is the brief explanation, the council is responsible for land use(zoning), code (laws for West Jordan), and budget (allocating money to categories for the Mayor to decide how it is spent to achieve desired outcome)
As the City of West Jordan transitions into a new term I want to thank outgoing council members Kelvin Green and Pamela Bloom. These at-large representatives have spent significant time shaping policy, approving budgets, and representing the interests of all property owners. Their involvement has shaped the future of West Jordan through a period of growth and change. I have enjoyed getting to know them and serving alongside them, we will miss them.
Looking ahead, the newly elected members of the West Jordan City Council bring new ideas, and renewed commitment to public service. As the legislative branch of the city having a mix of continuity and change—experienced outgoing members and incoming ones—helps the city maintain stability while embracing new perspectives.
For residents, this hand-off marks an important moment in local democracy. The legislative power of the council means that decisions made now will shape everything from infrastructure and development to public services and quality of life. As we welcome the new council members, community members are encouraged to stay engaged, attend meetings, and voice their priorities. In doing so, residents help ensure that the council’s work remains rooted in the values and needs of the city.
