Booms and Rumblings in West Jordan: What You Need to Know

A massive cloud of dark gray smoke billows into the sky above a fenced, barren landscape under a bright blue sky, suggesting a large fire or explosion in an open area.

West Jordan residents have been reporting booms and rumblings over the last few weeks. The culprit: the Tooele Army Depot and they say you can expect more throughout the summer and fall.

Each year, from April 1 through October 31, the Tooele Army Depot conducts open detonations to destroy old, obsolete, and damaged explosives. These activities are vital to making room for safer storage and ensuring that our nation’s warfighters have the best equipment available when needed. This practice has been conducted every year since World War II and is a routine part of depot operations.

Detonations typically occur in the morning and continue through the afternoon. The Army Depot posts weekly schedules and status updates on their social pages every Monday to let the public know what to expect.
