Mayor’s Message – January 2024

Mayor Burton on Fox 13's Good Day Utah chatting about his reelection

Together, West Jordan is making history! Four years ago, you entrusted me with the honor of becoming West Jordan’s first-ever “strong mayor.” Last month, you renewed your trust in me. It has been more than four decades since our city last embraced a leader for a second time, and I am profoundly grateful for the trust you have bestowed upon me.

The past four years have thrown a few curveballs our way, from navigating COVID-19 shutdowns, and an earthquake shakeup, to grappling with wild inflation, and even engaging in a resilient face-off with Russian hackers. We’ve weathered those storms like champions. In fact, we’ve accomplished a lot, and I’d like to share a few highlights with you:

  1. We prioritized citizen satisfaction by embracing an “open door” policy in the Mayor’s Office and introducing key technological enhancements to simplify access to public services.
  2. In the face of record-breaking inflation, we held tight to kept the budget in check. My administration presented, and will continue to present, balanced budgets setting the foundation for responsible fiscal stewardship that we’ve continued to build upon.
  3. We have built fantastic relationships at the state and national levels, resulting in more than $40 million in outside funding.
  4. We achieved stability in the water fund by implementing conservation-based rate policies.
  5. We’ve focused on employee retention, yielding a more stable work environment, ensuring uninterrupted city operations, and providing the best service to residents.
  6. We made desperately needed functional and structural improvements to City Hall, updating a crucial community gathering place.

I’m inspired by the positive impact each of you makes in our community. Together, let’s continue fostering a strong, healthy, and happy New Year in West Jordan!

Sincerely,

Mayor Dirk Burton
