2023’s New Election Dates

Last month, Rep. Chris Stewart of Utah’s 2nd Congressional District informed Gov. Spencer J. Cox that he will resign from the U.S. House of Representatives effective Sept. 15, 2023.

As a result, the executive and legislative branches have developed a timeline to fill the vacancy. In order to minimize the amount of time that the House seat will be vacant and to accommodate this year’s municipal elections, primary elections throughout the state will be held on Sept. 5, 2023, and the general election on Nov. 21, 2023.

This adjusted schedule impacts the entire state. Here’s a look at the important election dates:

2023 Primary Election Dates:

August 15: Vote-by-mail ballots mailed

August 22 to September 1: In-office early voting (Weekdays only, 8am to 5pm)

August 25: Voter registration deadline

August 29: Last day to request replacement ballot (if voter has not received original)

August 29 to September 1: Early Voting (3pm to 7pm)

September 5: Primary Election

2023 General Election Dates:

October 31: Vote-by-mail ballots mailed

November 7 to November 17: In-office early voting (Weekdays only)

Once this election cycle is over, things go back to the original statute. So, for the presidential election (2024), you’ll have to make sure your mail-in ballots are postmarked the day before Election Day.
