Watch. Search. Stay Informed. West Jordan City Meetings Made Easy

Seven people in business attire stand in front of a council chamber backdrop with “West Jordan City Council” and a mountain logo displayed on the left side of the image.

Staying informed just got easier—West Jordan City Public Meetings are now more accessible than ever.

All public meetings will be more interactive, searchable, and transparent–giving you the tools to stay engaged and informed with our PrimeGov Agenda Management software.

Key Updates

  • Live meetings have instant closed-captions in English and in Spanish.
  • Translate our agenda into almost any language.
  • A full, word-for-word, searchable transcript will be available 3-5 days post meeting.
  • The meeting transcripts can be downloaded.
  • Once the searchable transcript is available, the agenda will also be clickable. You will be able to navigate to the point in the meeting when the topic is discussed. This helps residents find more information on the topic they are interested in without having to watch the whole meeting.
  • Share or download the whole video or just a portion for your records or for sharing.
  • Council Member documents are available for quick and virus free download – this information has always been available to the public but is now more organized and instantly accessible. You can view online in your favorite browser or download them as a PDF.
  • Meetings that have been available on YouTube will still be available, but meeting videos and materials from January 2025 will be available on the City’s website.

To learn how to navigate our new website, see our instructions.

Definitions for better understanding: What is…?

  • An agenda? The agenda is the list of topics and legislation the Planning Commission or Council will talk about and potentially approve or deny. If a topic is not on the agenda 24 hours before the meeting, it cannot be discussed. This keeps meetings predictable and transparent for the public.
  • A Planning Commission? The Planning Commission is an appointed group of residents who work closely with city planners. They review land use proposals that are submitted to the city and will make recommendations for approval or denial. Any resident can apply to be a commission member and are chosen by the mayor, with advice and consent of the City Council.
  • A Committee of the Whole? The Committee of the Whole consists of the City Council and staff. These meetings are open to the public but do not involve any official action or voting. They allow the Council and staff to discuss and deliberate on land use or ordinance proposals in depth, without the formalities of regular Council Meeting rules.
  • A City Council? The City Council includes seven elected members from West Jordan City residents; Four district seats and three at-large seats. Council members serve for four-year terms. Elections are offset, meaning different seats are up for election at different times. There are no term limits for Council Members.
  • Council packet/documents? Agenda items have supporting information put together by staff for the council to understand all aspects of a topic, including official forms, declarations, proposals and notes. These documents are always available to the public and are available at least 24 hours before the meeting begins.

FAQs

How do I…

…Speak out on an item I received a public notice for?

Plan to participate under the Public Hearing section of the agenda, when the presiding officer opens Public Comment.

…Speak out on an issue of concern that is not on the agenda?

The Public Comment section of an agenda is where the public is welcome to address the Council on any city-related topic.

…Give Council Members a handout with information?

You can email the handout prior to the meeting by emailing councilcomments@westjordan.utah.gov, which is automatically forwarded to all Council Members. You can also approach a member of the Council Office staff (seated to the left of the council dais) prior to the start of the meeting, who will distribute your materials to the Council. Do not approach the Council before, during, or after your comment.

…Ask the council body a series of questions?

Council Members typically do not respond to questions or comments during Public Comment, as to not interrupt the speaker’s three-minute time limit. Speakers may ask rhetorical questions, but if you are seeking answers to your questions, please email the Council (councilcomments@westjordan.utah.gov) or schedule a meeting with your respective Council Member(s). If, on the Public Comment Card, you requested future follow-up, you may hear from a Council Member, a member of their staff, the Mayor, a member of the Mayor’s staff.

…Represent a group during a council meeting?

Before beginning your comment, ask the Council Chair, “May I have five minutes, as I am representing [INSERT GROUP NAME HERE].” At their sole discretion, the Chair may grant you more time. It is then expected that no additional individuals will attempt to address the Council on the same topic or under the same representation.

…Request that a community issue be discussed in a future meeting?

Agenda items require at least two Council Members before the topic can be submitted to Council Leadership for potential discussion and action. Please contact your respective district representative first, and then any At-Large members, as appropriate. Find your Council Member online at westjordan.utah.gov/citycouncil
