Flooding? It’s supposed to! Why Some Parks Flood and How They Help the City

You may have noticed some parks fill with water after a big rainstorm or during the spring melt. Don’t panic! They were meant for that!
These parks are overflows for stormwater. If we didn’t have these spaces to fill up with water, the water could end up in your basement.
Our storm drains pipes direct extra water from the streets to rivers and canals, but can only hold so much at a time. When we get a lot of rain, or there is a warm winter/spring day that melts all the snow, the water needs a place to hang out while it drains through the system.
Stormwater basins are important for controlling floods and excess water, and many of them are off-limits to the public. When a basin is wide and flat, we can put the land to work in two ways by allowing it to serve as a park. These parks just require a little patience during wet seasons.
When you see the park flooded, please remember:
- Wait for it to drain. It is designed to take about two or three days to fully empty, depending on the amount of water.
- Wait until the ground is dry before using the park to keep the grass in good condition. If it’s muddy, not only will you get covered in it, the grass will get churned up and won’t be able to take root again.
- Help us keep this water clean. The storm drains take water directly to our rivers without any filtering. Any trash, chemicals or waste end up in our canals and rivers.
