Citizen Police Academy

The Citizen Police Academy is in place so you can receive a working knowledge through a behind-the-scenes experience designed to foster a closer relationship between the police and the community we serve and you live in.

Classes run for 11 weeks and are held once a week for three hours. The instruction is comprehensive and interactive covering a different area of the West Jordan Police Department and the justice system each week.

The Citizen Police Academy classes are very popular and are offered twice a year in January and August. The Academy can only accept 24 people for each 11-week session. You are expected to complete the full course. You must be at least 18-years-old and able to pass a criminal background check. Applicants must also complete enrollment forms. There are no fees or charges to attend if you are approved.

Classes start at 6:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. and are held in the West Jordan Justice Center Community Room at 8040 South Redwood Road.  There are two field trips: firearms range and a SWAT Team scenario.

Classroom information includes:

  • Overview of the West Jordan Police Department organization and how it is structured

  • How we recruit and train

  • Introductions to police divisions:

    • Homicide

    • Traffic

    • Investigations Unit

    • Crime Scene Investigation and Processing

    • K-9 Unit Demonstration / SWAT Demonstration

    • Firearms

    • Gangs

    • Narcotics

  • You can go one-on-one with officers with:

    • Handcuffing

    • Personal Defensive Tactics

    • Crime Scene and Crime Lab Tour

    • Simulated "Sim-Gun" scenarios with bad guy/gal actors

    • Firearms Safety including instruction and practice and "shoot ... don't shoot" video simulator

    • Four-hour ride-along with a West Jordan Police Patrol Officer

Instructors are drawn from the police academy staff, from police officers currently assigned to specific enforcement divisions, and also from non-WJPD divisions and agencies. CPA class members are given an opportunity to observe police patrol work through a four-hour ride-along experience with a patrol officer. On the last day of class, members participate in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate of completion.

Who May Attend?
Classes are made up of persons from all walks of life. There is no fee to attend the Citizen Police Academy. The minimum age for enrollment is 18. Applicants must not have a criminal record, must complete the CPA – Application and pass a basic background investigation.

When You Graduate
