Mayor’s Message October 2023

This past Saturday, I spent time at the City’s most recent dumpster event. Our event kicks off early in the morning and as the sun rise hit the Oquirrh Mountains, making the vibrant autumn leaves glow, I was struck by the beauty of our hometown. I love being able to participate in this clean up event and see so many friends and neighbors! Thank you for doing your part to keep West Jordan a fantastic place to live.

Would you be-leaf that we collected nearly 40 dumpsters and over 100 tons of debris this past weekend? Many of those who dropped off items this past week shared that they are in the process of preparing their homes for colder weather.

The mountains have already seen their first dusting of snow this year and the Farmer’s Almanac predicts a snowy “winter wonderland” in northern Utah, with colder-than-normal temperatures.

Here are some proactive ways you can prep for colder weather, along with a few city resources to help you out:

  1. Winterize Sprinklers: The Utah Department of Water Resources recommends that West Jordan residents discontinue irrigation now. Be sure to drain and shut off any exterior water systems to prevent freezing. Learn more about winterizing your sprinklers.
  1. Leaf Removal and Gutter Cleaning: Regularly rake and remove leaves from your lawn to prevent dead patches. Clear out gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage during fall rains and snowstorms. The last green waste pick up is the week of Thanksgiving.
  1. Roof Check: Inspect the roof for any damaged or missing shingles before winter snow and ice arrive.
  1. Seal Gaps: Check for gaps in windows and doors. Use weather stripping or caulk to prevent drafts and keep out pests.
  1. Heating System Check: Have your furnace or heating system serviced to ensure it’s ready for colder temperatures.
  1. Fireplace Inspection: If you have a fireplace, make sure it’s cleaned and inspected.
  1. Smoke and CO Detectors: Test and replace batteries in all detectors. For individuals who cannot perform these checks on their own, fire crews may be reached at 801-840-4000 for assistance.
  1. Ceiling Fans: Reverse the direction to clockwise for winter. This pushes the warm air down.
  1. Dispose of Old Documents and Electronic Clutter: Did you know that residents can dispose of old documents and electronic waste through the city? Our next Shred Event will be held Saturday, November 4.
  1. Report Service Issues in Your Neighborhood: Check your neighborhood for dark streetlights, potholes, abandoned vehicles, etc. Report any problems to the city.

May your October preparations set the tone for a warm, safe, and enjoyable season ahead! 🍁🏠🕯️
