FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: FIREWORKS BAN
These questions will be updated as we continue to learn more about the orders surroundings fireworks in Utah.
What is an executive order?
An executive order is a tool the state can use to act within existing law. It cannot create new laws. In this case, the order gives local governments the authority to temporarily prohibit the discharge of fireworks based on fire danger.
This order does not suspend the Utah Fireworks Act, which means the usual statewide fireworks sales and discharge dates still exist—but local use can be restricted.
Did the Governor’s Executive Order prohibit the sales of fireworks?
No. The Governor’s Executive Order did not alter the sales of fireworks. Fireworks can still be legally sold and purchased June 24 through July 25.
Who will enforce the fireworks ban?
Local police and fire departments will enforce the ban.
How did the Mayor and Fire Chief make their decision?
They based their decision on data, expert input from the State Forester, and feedback from the City Council. The decision was not made lightly and out of an abundance of caution.
How can I get updates like this from the City?
Follow our official social media pages, check the City website, and sign up for our email newsletter. Help us spread the word! Tell your neighbors and friends who live nearby.
Is the City’s Fourth of July fireworks show canceled?
No. The City’s show will continue as planned. It takes place in a controlled environment with trained crews on standby. All properly licensed and permitted professional shows are still allowed.
Are fireworks sales banned?
No. Vendors can still sell fireworks. The state law that allows sales is still in effect. The order will be reviewed again before Pioneer Day. You may still purchase fireworks; they just cannot be set off in the City during the ban.
How long does the order last?
The executive order lasts for 30 days. The State and State Forester will review conditions after July 5. If restrictions are still needed near Pioneer Day, a new order may be issued.
Can I use fireworks on my private property?
Discharging Fireworks is banned city-wide in West Jordan, regardless of private or public property. The only legal fireworks shows that will be allowed are professional/commercial licensed shows.
Are there any zones in the city where fireworks are allowed?
No. There are no authorized areas for fireworks discharge in the city.
Will the city issue fines? If so, how much?
Police and Fire crews will be patrolling the city and prefer to educate rather than immediately issue fines. If problems persist, it may result in civil or criminal penalties.
How do I report violations?
You can report illegal fireworks by calling the non-emergency dispatch line: 801-840-4000. Please keep in mind that crews will respond by priority.
What is the difference between sold fireworks and permitted fireworks shows?
Permitted fireworks shows are licensed and reviewed by city and state fire leaders. Fireworks purchased privately by individuals generally do not require a permit or review.
Why can professional shows continue when residents can’t use fireworks?
Professional shows are carefully planned and staffed by firefighters and pyrotechnic professionals. These shows happen after an extensive review and planning process.
If I live close to the border of another city, can I go there to light fireworks?
Some cities throughout Utah may have designated areas in their jurisdictions that allow fireworks. West Jordan does not have any areas within its city limits to light fireworks legally. Residents may elect to go to other cities that are allowing fireworks, but West Jordan city leaders are encouraging residents to attend the Western Stampede 4th of July free fireworks show at Veterans Memorial Park starting at 10 PM.
Do these rules apply on July 4 only or all days during the legal fireworks window?
The Governor’s State of Emergency declaration specifically applies to July 2nd through July 5th. This is the standard window during which fireworks are authorized by state code.
Can HOAs, businesses, or churches still host fireworks?
Private fireworks use is prohibited across the city of West Jordan. If an HOA, business, or church wanted to host a public display they would have to obtain an appropriate permit and license from the city.
I already bought fireworks—what should I do with them?
Fireworks that have already been purchased can be saved for a later date when conditions allow. After July 5th, state leaders will review the conditions of wildfire danger and decide which would require another order. This ban does not yet impact Pioneer Day on July 24th.
Why wasn’t there a public meeting?
The Governor issued an executive order specifically required that Mayors and City Fire Chiefs be given the authority to determine how fireworks should be used in their city. Public meetings are not a procedural component during a State of Emergency. Elected officials are always open to hearing comments from community members.
